Post-graduate fellowships for African scientists at ILRI

With generous funding support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), ILRI is offering five Ph.D scholarships for livestock researchers from sub-Saharan African countries. ILRI invites applicants from young African scientists, based at the research and learning institution. The priority research themes are:

  • Climate change, impacts and adaptation
  • Livestock, environment and sustainability
  • Emerging diseases, impacts and human health
  • Market access, value chain analysis and SPS
  • Risk, vulnerability and sustainability of pastoral systems
  • Animal genetics resources and breeding
  • Smallholder livestock intensification and implications
  • Monitoring, Evaluation and Impact Assessment of Livestock Research and Development

The fellowship is only awarded for pursuing a PhD degree for a period of three years. Female candidates are encouraged to apply.

Minimum requirements for eligibility:

  • First degree with a second class upper division in agriculture, animal production any related subject
  • M.Sc degree in a livestock or  related discipline corresponding to the above mentioned themes
  • Currently based at a research or an academic institution in SSA
  • Already registered or in the process of registering for a Ph.D degree in a regional university
  • The candidate may not exceed the age limit of 36 years by June 2009
  • Only candidates of Sub-Saharan African countries (excluding Kenya)  are eligible for this scholarship

The grantees are expected to register in one of the regional universities. The scholarship will cover the stipend, tuition fees, some research expences and other related costs up to a maximum of USD 12,600.00 per year.
