The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), together with the Animal Production Society of Kenya (APSK), the Kenya Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (MoALF), the All Africa Society for Animal Production (AASAP) and other partners, is helping to organize the 6th All Africa Conference on Animal Agriculture (AACAA). Held every four years, the conference will take place 27–30 Oct 2014 at the Kenyatta international Convention Centre, in Nairobi’s central business district.
The AACAA provides a platform for all stakeholders in animal agriculture to share their experiences and scientific findings in animal agriculture in Africa and beyond. This year’s conference, the theme of which is ‘Africa’s Animal Agriculture: Macro-trends and Future Opportunities’, is organized around five sub-themes, two of them organized by ILRI. The five sub-themes are: youth, smallholder production systems, pastoral systems, market access and human capacity.
ILRI agricultural economist Isabelle Baltenweck, from France, and ILRI development economist Andrew Mude, from Kenya, are convening the ‘market access’ and ‘pastoral systems’ sessions, respectively. The market session will focus on opportunities and challenges for improving access to markets for African livestock products locally, regionally and globally. The pastoralism session will highlight interventions to modernize and sustain pastoral livelihoods and the kinds of policies needed to ensure this.
A call for papers on these sub-themes is now open. Applicants, including post-graduate students, dryland system researchers and agriculture economists with interests in livestock market trends, should send an expression of their interest to info@aasaa6.org with copies to program@aasaa6.org and logistics@aasaa6.org
